Is Higher Education Worth the Price?

In the modern day, many careers require individuals to have a bachelor's degree or higher. In order to attain a degree, one must go to college for a certain amount of time. While that may seem easy, other may disagree. The reasoning behind this is because college can be quite expensive.  Many people constantly debate whether the price of higher education is truly worth it. Some may believe that going to an ivy league school would ensure them a good paying job. Others on the other hand may believe that it doesn’t matter where you get your education.

In the “Kenyon Commencement Speech”, the speaker talks about how the liberal arts is essential considering that it helps us with the way we think  as well as help us figure out who we really are. Throughout the speech, the speaker is trying to tell us about the importance of having an education and that knowledge is power. “The New Liberal Arts”  talks about many of the common misconceptions. From reading these articles, I have more knowledge on the liberal arts than I had prior to reading. The liberal arts can be quite important because it helps people with their communication skills as well as their structure. This could potentially prepare someone for the real world which can be a good thing. Having great communication skills is keen because we as people communicate with one another everyday. A person receiving this kind of education would be able to figure out who they are as a person. However, there are also people who strongly disagree. They believe that it shouldn’t matter what college you attend and that paying thousands of dollars will not be worth it in the end. Many Ivy league schools like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton may provide the best education. Despite this, the tuition per year can truly put someone in a position they wish not to be, in debt.

Growing up in a Latino household, I was taught that having an education is important. My parents would always tell me that the people who spend lots of money on their children's education are making a great investment.  Higher education seems to be worth the price to a certain degree. College may not be for everyone and there are other alternatives that a person could take. Community college as well as trade school could be alternatives a persons education. Community college is easier on a persons wallet and may provide almost the same education one would get at a normal college. Although a person could potentially be bombarded with loans at a regular college or university, they could definitely pay it back considering that they have a good paying job and a degree. In the end, it is worth it because you will have money and most importantly, Knowledge.
